The Glory Hounds.
Flaubert formed this revivalist folk Duo in 1969 with Mad Dog John Marcell, who wrote and sang this particular piece. Flaubert contributed lyrics and played mandolin and octave mandolin.
The Glory Hounds played around the Deep South in various incarnations for over a decade until Mad Dog John and he were arrested for urinating on a public utility in Alabama.
Their famous “hallelujah” defense – that the fire hydrant in question was an attractive nuisance – was successful, but it became too difficult to get bookings after that, so all the later recordings were done in the studio without any snake handling or speaking in tongues.
