So, you may be asking yourself, “Why does this question of alignment matter at all in the first place?”

The proper alignment of molecular being (lower case “b”) is essential in order for cells—and life itself—to function. Improper alignments, as I’ve already pointed out, lead quite directly to disease, without any detours. Sometimes these diseases will even be fatal. In this sense, as with selfish and unselfish people, there are selfish and unselfish alignments. Cancer, for example, arises because a series of related molecular alignments prefer the propagation of their own existence to the existence of the organism they actually owe their service to.

If we see earth as an organism, to extrapolate from this example, we can quite easily see mankind in its present state as a kind of cancer: the species is improperly aligned from within, and the outward results are catastrophic. We can see from this that, as Swedenborg maintained, the health not only of every Being but of every society ultimately rests on its molecular alignment in the sense of whether it’s selfish or unselfish.
